Ochi Chernye

There is a great jazz version of this song by Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt and others (it's called 'Dark Eyes').
I like the pure gypseyness of this version. Often in Tolstoy or Dostoyevsky a character will be described as spending days with the gypsies, often burning through great wads of money in the process. Sometimes the squandered money will be a plot device. This clip gives an idea of the mix of dissipation and joie d’verve that the character must experience. The Russian writers seem to assume the reader knows what is going on with the gypsies (cultural imperialism that I’m sure Obama would frown on). But it doesn’t look to me like the money could have been totally wasted.

Hoyt Axton and John Hartford: Yellow Rose of Texas

Hoyt's mother wrote 'Heartbreak Hotel.' In the '60s I saw him live at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach. CA. This clip is sedate compared to what I saw that night. The Golden Bear was a small intimate folk club in those days. The customers in the front row were only three or four feet from the performer. Hoyt put his guitar on his lap and used a butter knife on the neck. A guy in the front row asked, "Aren't you supposed to use a straight razor for that?" Hoyt leaned over to that guy and said in his gravely voice, "I left it in an audient."
John Hartford is memorable because he always made the Glen Campbell variety show worth watching.

Linda Ronstadt: Blue Bayou

I saw Linda Ronstsdt perform at Cerritos College. It was earlier in her career than when this was shot. It was almost at the beginning and she looked like Zooey Deschanel when she was new. The warm-up act was Dan Hicks who had earlier been leader of Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, which was a kind of novelty group that did music along the lines of Leon Redbone and Doctor John. The crowd seemed to be all Linda R. fans. I was the only one that I knew who was also a Dan Hicks fan. The audience did not enjoy Hicks and booed him more and more until he became very angry at them. Finally he stopped and said loudly, "F____ you! I only came here to feel Linda's titties!" And then he walked off stage to cat calls and cheers.
