Comment of the Day: Palin and the Illegals

President Palin will take this up and do it right.
DREAM=path to cistizenship=Amensty.
Palin is for legal status for illegals, some sort of work permit, which would of course lead directly to a huge amnesty.
I will not support Palin in any R primary for this reason.
Sarah Palin:
No, we can’t make it easy, but they’re here. And we can’t starve them to death. And if they can’t work, if they don’t have a green card to work, they’re going to be hosed. I mean, they got to pay rent, they got to buy groceries…
PALIN: Well…
O’REILLY: …this, that and the other thing. So this is where it gets very complicated, governor. You know, it gets very, very complicated…
PALIN: No.
O’REILLY: …because you are rewarding bad behavior. You’re letting them stay in the United States. And they came in illegally.
PALIN: Then let’s keep it — then we won’t complicate it anymore. Let’s keep it simple. And let’s say no, if you are here illegally, and if you don’t follow the steps that at some point through immigration reform we’re going to be able to provide, and that is to somehow allow to you work. If you’re not going to do that, then you will be deported. You will be gone.

Sarah Palin will not deport illegals, or attrit them with e verify, she will grant them work permits.
No, to Sarah Palin for the R nomination. She’s no better than McCain.

“Bogus claims have been made by those who only want to make trouble.”

Pundit and Pundette ran a little piece yesterday exposing more of the emperor’s nakedness. They pointed out that there is no Obama health care bill. I can only add to that his willingness to use as proof of his statements and wild accusations any part of the existing bills he finds convenient and to ignore any part of them he finds inconvenient. His accusations are by definition wild because they are not based on any portion of the real world anyone but President Obama can access. Add to this his speech last night about his own private health care world and you have a Fantasyland that is only entered by the president but used by him as a weapon to beat up on his enemies. And on top of that we have an unquestioning press corps who have entered another bizarre reality in which they think their job is to support the president no matter what rather than truly getting to the bottom of what he says. They are not even very sure of what he is saying or proposing but they back it up one hundred per cent regardless.
Barack Obama spoke to both chambers of Congress last night and said that, “Bogus claims have been made by those who only want to make trouble.” Sounds like some pretty rotten people. I don’t think too highly of people who only want to make trouble. I wonder why the president did not name some of them and give us some examples of these bogus claims.
He did gave as an example of these trouble makers those who say that illegal aliens will be covered by his reform legislation. The little problem with that is that no legislation presently under consideration in congress includes any procedure for determining the immigration status of a recipient of health care. Even more embarrassing for the president’s claim is the fact that none of the legislation being considered proscribes any penalty for a provider who treats non-covered non-citizens. In other words, people who make such claims are not wrong. Yet, in spite of the truth of their claims, Mr. Obama gets all holier than thou and attacks their character without factual basis. Who is it who, “Only want(s) to make trouble?” If anyone fits that definition it would seem to be President Obama and his bogus claims.
Mr. Obama waxes indignant easily. And it would be easier to take him serious if I had ever been led to believe his sermonizing is based on some reality other than his desire to make his adversaries look bad. But the more factless screeds that come from the president the less likely it is that people will see him as anything other than a pathetic joke. A pathetic joke who clouds the air of civil discourse with lies and just makes progress more difficult for anyone who seriously undertakes legislative improvement.

Tonight, I was going to start reading "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," because I love the title.

But then I spotted an even more alluring title: "The Recidivism Patterns of Previously Deported Aliens Released From A Local Jail."

So I shelled out $20, digitally, to buy a copy of this scholarly study at Crime & Delinquency OnlineFirst.

It's not a laugh riot, but four facts in it jumped off the page at me:


1. More crimes per illegal alien, or more illegal aliens?
Previous studies, the authors reported, found that 27% of all inmates in federal prisons were criminal aliens, while supposedly just 4% of America's population consisted of illegal aliens (i.e., 12 million out of 300 million).

Think about that disparity: 27% vs. 4%. If both numbers are right, then illegal aliens commit a disproportionate number of crimes: 4% of the population commits 27% of the crimes.

Alternatively, and more plausibly, the 4% figure grossly underestimates the number of illegal aliens in the country. But if illegal aliens constitute 27% of the U.S. population, that means there would be about 81 million of them (i.e., 27% x 300 million people).

So I'm thinking both propositions are probably true: illegal aliens commit a disproportionate amount of crime, and they make up much more than 4% of the population.


2. "We're Number One" -- but not in a good way.
California's prisons hold 40% of all the illegal aliens who are in all state prisons throughout America. The L.A. County jail holds 13% of all illegal aliens in all jails in the U.S. Hence, we are "Ground Zero" for illegal alien criminals. That's probably why, when it comes to illegal aliens, many American citizens in other states still don't "get it;" the problem is worse here than anywhere else.


3. Rampant recidivism: 73% of the previously deported criminal illegal aliens released from the L.A. County Jail were re-arrested at least once within one year.
And get this: 28% of the previously deported criminal aliens released from jail got arrested three or more times within a year after their release. And 32% of the criminal aliens who had not been previously deported were also re-arrested within a year. How many victims could we protect by letting the LAPD investigate and arrest these criminals for immigration violations, rather than waiting to catch them committing murders or selling drugs?


4. Mexico gave us 86% of the previously deported criminal illegal aliens released from the L.A. County Jail.So the next time someone calls you a "racist" for referring to Mexico, as opposed to, say, Norway, as the source of most illegal aliens, just lay that 86% reality on him. You can even quote the study itself: "Race and ethnicity variables were available in the data but not included due to a lack of variation in the sample."

Don't bother trying to explain that "Mexico" is not a race, and neither is illegal conduct. Come to think of it, don't bother explaining any of this, because people who call you "racist" are not sincere; they just hope to intimidate you into silence.

A New Big Lie

Deporting Illegal Aliens: Inherently Wrong? We’re Starting to Treat It That Way . . .
Is catching and deporting illegal aliens an inherently bad thing?
You’d think the answer is obvious: of course not. Yet, when you think about it, that is the question raised by two recent news articles.
First, there has been a verdict in the case of that Arizona rancher who held illegal aliens at gunpoint on his property. As I told you in detail here, his ranch has been vandalized by trespassing illegal aliens for years. He has turned over 10,000 over to ICE. Some of the illegals he detained sued him — and guess what? They won:
A federal jury found Tuesday that a southern Arizona rancher didn’t violate the civil rights of a group of illegal immigrants who said he detained them at gunpoint in 2004.
The eight-member civil jury also found Roger Barnett wasn’t liable on claims of battery and false imprisonment.
But the jury did find him liable on four claims of assault and four claims of infliction of emotional distress and ordered Barnett to pay $77,804 in damages — $60,000 of which were punitive.
Lord. This is where, five years ago, I would have engaged in a verbose tirade. Now, the tirades have been beaten out of me. This is too outrageous for words, and I have none adequate to the occasion.
Second, we have an interesting article on ICE fugitive alien raids forwarded by commenter “Hax Vobiscum.” The complaint, recently discussed on this blog, is that teams devoted to arresting fugitive aliens have been targeting illegals who aren’t fugitive aliens. As I told you in two posts (here and here) about an L.A. Times article on the issue, a recent report didn’t bear out the contention that the teams were actually targeting non-fugitive aliens. Rather, the report suggested that the teams were arresting increasing numbers of fugitive aliens (including those with criminal records) every year, together with even more non-fugitive aliens encountered during the raids.
But the new Washington Post article raises the first real evidence that teams may actually have been targeting illegal aliens who aren’t criminals. Read the whole article and watch the accompanying video, and you’ll see the evidence is far from conclusive. Some agents have one story, and others have a different story. The article centers on an incident that began when ICE agents rolled into a 7-11 parking lot and had illegals running up to offer day labor services — that much is corroborated by the video. Even the focus of the sob story — a fellow stopping for a coffee break while his son was being treated at a nearby hospital — refuses to say whether he is illegal, on the advice of his lawyers.
As regular readers know, I support targeting illegal aliens who have committed crimes other than entering the country illegally. Deporting those illegals should be our top priority. But if you’re an ICE agent and illegals come running up to your car to offer illegal day labor, I don’t think you’re obliged to ignore that. On the contrary, I think you’re obliged to act.
You could pick apart the specifics of the particular scenario and the videotape endlessly, but the bottom line is this: prioritizing the deportation of criminals should be ICE’s top priority. But there is nothing inherently wrong with deporting illegal aliens, regardless of whether they have committed crimes unrelated to their immigration status.
Let’s stop criticizing ICE for doing its job. But let’s continue encouraging ICE to prioritize deporting the criminals first.

He Employs a Political Device to Defeat the Ends of Nature

Employers who use illegal immigrant workers are breaking the law in order to escape the law of supply and demand. The use of these workers depresses wages for American workers. Many politicians who claim to be friends of unions and the working class also are in the tank for these employers who are willling to break the law in order to lower the living standard of American workers. And I've never seen this aspect of the issue adressed in any of the presidential debates or on any news or opinion show. The establishment of the two political parties and the MSM have sold out. Just one case is John Edwards who blathers on and on about fighting the power of monied interests but will give them all the cheap labor they want and screw over as many American workers as they tell him to.
