What could be more fun than a box full of kittens?

Fun!

Is there something symbolic in this, about those who are free wanting to get back into captivity?

Maybe not. Maybe kittens are just kittens.

It's great to hear from you, Joe.
I've long been a student of cats. So I'm going to answer this like the know-it-all that I am.
Even though domesticated you can still see in cats their hard wired predator instincts. The box is an easily defended spot from which to watch and pounce. Also while in the box with their siblings they are less prone to being seen by other predators or prey. And they can easily get out of the box for an attack or a scouting expedition.
